The Kerr Lab in the Department of Chemistry and Department of Biomedical Sciences is looking for a student laboratory technician.  The position requires a mixture of microbiology and chemistry skill sets.  In general, the technician will be required to work within a team environment although they should also be able to function independently.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The work will entail the following:
• Isolation of bacteria from marine samples
• Fermentation of rare marine-derived bacteria
• Extraction and chemical fractionation of fermentations

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Successful candidate will be enrolled in or has completed an undergraduate degree in chemistry or biology
• Previous experience working in a lab
• Strong skill sets in microbiology, including
o aseptic technique
o fermentation
o microbe preservation
o DNA isolation
o polymerase chain reaction
o fermentor operation
• Previous experience in chemistry, such as
o solvent extractions
o solid-phase extraction
o low pressure chromatography
o HPLC-MS
• Ability to work independently
• WHMIS training would be an asset
