The Institute of Island Studies seeks a graduate student researcher to assist in coordinating a mixed methods research project on assessing Prince Edward Island’s “Vital Signs,” June to October 2019, in collaboration with the Community Foundation of PEI. Through a combination of desk research and focus groups with community leaders, the project collects quantitative and qualitative data that measure the health of the province, resulting in a comprehensive report that will be circulated province-wide in October.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Summarizing and interpreting secondary statistical data from federal, provincial and municipal sources
• Transcribing and analyzing approximately 12 hours of qualitative focus group data

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Excellent organizational skills, oral and written communications skills, and accomplished research skills (especially in qualitative methods, but also in understanding and using quantitative indicators)
• Excellent computer skills (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, database management, statistical software, internet literacy)
• Experience in transcribing focus group data would be an asset
• Student will be self-motivated and have the ability to handle diverse tasks, work well independently as well as under supervision
• Enrolment in a graduate degree program is required
• The ideal candidate will demonstrate a knowledge of and interest in island-related issues such as economic, social and political change, population and sustainability
