A student research assistant position (up to 37.5 hr/wk) is available for an undergraduate engineering student (going into Year 3 of 4 or Year 4 of 5) with an interest in Inclusion and Diversity in Engineering and Leadership in Sustainability (IDEaLS), specifically on a project involving the (1) the Design of Smart Sustainable Cities or (2) the development of Climate Change Models. 

The student will work as part of an interdisciplinary team that will use innovative teaching tools such as experiential learning and hands on activities to develop a model that enables them to create, visualize and assess the impact design decisions have on cities and on climate. The model could be used for studying the impacts of growth, developing future scenarios, experimenting with strategies for sustainable development, understanding the climate resilience of the designed infrastructure, and for better understanding the outcomes of the design for the people who ultimately will live there.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The student will research current practices for designing smart, sustainable urban systems and explore current climate modeling activities to integrate and connect factors that impact climate, population, infrastructure, and growth
  • The student will work as part of an international, interdisciplinary team to experiment with strategies for sustainable development
  • The student will contribute to writing a final report
  • The student will participate in public knowledge dissemination such as presentations and workshops

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Good academic record and a strong work ethic
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Proficiency in interpersonal and written communication is required
  • Experience in the area of sustainable engineering is required
  • Previous experience with the design of sustainable infrastructure is an asset
  • Previous experience in engineering leadership is an asset
  • Interest in social entrepreneurship is an asset

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
