The Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation (hereafter known as the “Climate Centre”) at the University of Prince Edward Island is a destination for world class research and learning that provides expertise and collaboration within a living laboratory setting. The Climate Centre houses state-of-the-art research centres, including the internationally recognized UPEI Climate Research Lab, as well as the UPEI School of Climate Change and Adaptation. Research activities at the Climate Centre include applying drone technology, precision agriculture, and big data analytics to climate change issues of coastal erosion, food security and human health.

Four students will be hired under an ACOA grant to assist in the Climate Centre activities for summer 2023.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assisting Climate Research Lab supervisor in:

  • Designing, prototyping, and building water quality data measuring devices
  • Organizing and preparing water quality sensors, wave action monitors, and ancillary equipment for installation
  • Locating stations and mapping of potential locations
  • Installing water quality and wave action monitoring stations
  • Setting up instruments for reporting real time
  • Conducting troubleshooting and programming of sensors, wave gauges and data loggers

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current or past registration at a recognized high school in Prince Edward Island, with preference given to students that demonstrate their intent to enroll in the UPEI Applied Climate Change program upon graduation
  • Demonstrated proficiency in environmental science, computer science, or engineering coursework
  • Knowledge of climate change impacts and monitoring technology
  • Demonstrated experience with climate monitoring equipment, design, and handling

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
