The Canadian Centre for Climate Change & Adaptation (CCCCA) is seeking a Research Assistant to provide a wide variety of research support services to the UPEI School of Climate Change and Adaptation and the CCCCA.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to research team in the acquisition and compilation and analysis of PEI climate, weather, tidal and coastal extreme events monitoring datasets
  • Conduct field investigations to verify data and photograph sites of interest to support case studies
  • Prepare descriptions of site observations regarding coastal development, shoreline armouring type, condition and materials, and other activities in the coastal zone
  • Archive research for supporting evidence relating to historic extreme weather events; major coastal developments and adaptation case studies
  • Assist with a literature review and jurisdictional scan for shoreline policies and coastal management plans
  • Assist with the review of current policies, programs, and legislation with regards to coastal protection and coastal development
  • Assist in data compilation, analysis, communications, and editing of final reports
  • Participate in regular project team meetings, prepare briefing notes and summaries

QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful applicants will possess the following qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a master’s degree in Climate Change or Environmental Science or a related field, plus a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience
  • Experience with collecting data from remote weather and tide stations, trouble-shooting weather station and tide gauge hardware
  • Experience accessing online open-source data (including but not limited to weather stations, marine and freshwater monitoring stations, and tide gauges)
  • Experience analyzing climate data trends and extreme events observed in climate and water elevation data
  • Knowledge of environmental processes and climate change indicators for Prince Edward Island, specifically relating to the coastal zone, including coastal erosion and coastal flood extreme events
  • Familiarity with PEI communities to provide local context support for the research team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and Word, or equivalent applications. Experience using Recruit and Colleague program software is considered an asset
