The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) of the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) is seeking applications from qualified individuals for a full-time Medical Radiation Technologist with Magnetic Resonance designation (MRT(MR)) to staff, implement and help run the new 1.5T Siemens Magnetom Sola MRI Machine at AVC. This machine will be utilized by small animal, exotics and large animal patients, and has the potential for human use and research.  This individual will work within the Radiology Department team at the VTH with another MRT and a registered veterinary technician (RVT), as well as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) who oversees the department. This individual will collaborate with various specialty services within the hospital, primarily including small animal internal medicine, large animal internal medicine, small animal surgery, and large animal surgery. This individual will also participate in other procedures within the radiology department including radiographs, computed tomography (CT) and ultrasounds, and will be part of the clinical teaching program for 4th year (DVM students).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The medical radiation technologist (MR) will:

  • Help to develop MRI specific policies, procedures, and usage guidelines within the VTH
  • Develop and maintain safety policies and procedures as well as training and record keeping ensuring safe compliance of the MRI
  • Work with radiologists and clinicians to develop MRI specific protocols for various veterinary patient species
  • Schedule, position animals, and carry out radiographic examinations on small and large animals (including but not limited to radiographs, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, nuclear scintigraphy, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Assess the quality of images and positioning
  • Be knowledgeable in the use of DR, PACS, and electronic storage
  • Assist the veterinarian or radiologist and prepare animals or equipment for special examinations including nuclear scintigraphy, CT, MRI and ultrasound studies
  • Assist in the training of veterinary students and new staff
  • Maintain equipment to radiation safety standards, perform quality control measurements, assist faculty in the direction and training of additional technicians and students
  • Assist in the cleaning and disinfection of the radiology service areas
  • Assist in the maintenance of equipment to ensure proper functioning and availability
  • Train other MRT and RVT staff in the radiology department on MRI usage, processes and policies
  • Maintain collegial and professional interactions and communication with colleagues, students, and clients at all times
  • Maintain safe, respectful, professional, and ethical conduct, handling interactions with patients and during patient care as befitting a veterinary teaching hospital environment and in accordance with veterinary regulatory bodies

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a formal program of study in medical radiation technology from a recognized educational facility with a specialized designation in MR
  • Must have current registration with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists
  • Experience or interest in CT and MRI modalities is required, with 3 years of clinical experience preferred
  • Experience with radiographs and ultrasound is preferred
  • Any experience in a veterinary setting or with animal patients would be considered an asset
  • Any experience in an academic teaching environment would be considered an asset
  • Must possess strong work ethic with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated and accountable to yourself, your patients and your team
  • Experience with a flexible schedule (including evening/weekend work is preferred)
