Graduate Research Assistant - Island Studies and Environmental Studies Program - Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Science
$27.00 per hour, as per PSAC Local 86000 (plus 4% vacation pay)
May 5, 2025 – September 12, 2025 (with possibility of extension)
Dr. Nicholas Mercer, Island Studies/Environmental Studies, is seeking applications for a graduate student research assistant to help with the development and implementation of a community-based research project which seeks to assess the extent of water, energy, and food security on the Port au Port Peninsula, Newfoundland and Labrador The student will contribute to all phases of the study including research design, implementation, analysis, and reporting of results.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Help to develop a research ethics application for research involving human participation
- Help to expand and conduct a conceptual literature review on the ‘water-energy-food security nexus’
- Help to plan and implement logistics for public focus group discussions
- Help with data transcription, qualitative analysis, and writing or reporting of results
- Help in developing presentation materials
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will:
- Be currently enrolled in a UPEI graduate program, with preference given to a Master of Arts in Island Studies student
- Excellent knowledge of Island Studies and interest in community engaged research
- Excellent analysis and writing skills
- Ability to work independently
- Attention to detail
- Excellent computer skills, knowledge of data transcription or thematic analyses software are an asset
This position is covered by a Collective Agreement between the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the University of Prince Edward Island. Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students.
