The Department of Physics is seeking an undergraduate Research Assistant for a research project, entitled “Optics-based biological physics experiments.” The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Profs. Maria Kilfoil, James Polson and William Whelan.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn sample preparation protocols for preparation of biological physics materials (DNA with DNA-processing enzymes)
  • Carry out optical tweezers and optical microscopy experiments on the samples
  • Assist in the extension of an existing optical tweezers experimental system, involving additional hardware components and computer control, under supervisor guidance
  • Carry out some surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy tests towards developing an optical protocol to measure micro plastic content of water samples
  • Analyze data, present analyzed data in figures, and be engaged in critical analysis of results
  • Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of PHYS 3330 Advanced Lab or equivalent physics research methods course is a requirement
  • Have attained a minimum of 3rd year undergraduate standing
  • Strong familiarity with typical physics research hardware
  • Some Matlab programming experience will be considered a definite asset
  • Ability to present analyzed data in figures and be engaged in critical analysis of results
  • The ability to work independently
  • Must be reliable and dependable
  • Maturity and ability to exercise sound judgement
  • Being well organized will be considered a definite asset
