Diagnostic Services at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), invites applications for a full-time contract faculty position for a Diagnostic Virologist. AVC is one of 5 veterinary colleges in Canada, and serves the provinces of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.


Responsibilities:

The position provides professional oversight of diagnostic laboratory activities and three full-time technologists in the Regional Diagnostic Virology Services (RDVS), which is one of the major disciplines of Diagnostic Services at the AVC. The RDVS is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited by the Standard Council of Canada and offers a wide range of tests from traditional (virus isolation, fluorescent antibody test, ELISA, etc.) to molecular (real-time PCR, sequencing, phylogenetic analysis, etc.) for food animals, horses, companion animals, wildlife, and aquatics. It performs Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) accredited tests and is involved with activities and mandates of the Canadian Animal Health Disease Surveillance Network (CAHSN) on disease surveillance and emergency response for foreign animal and zoonotic diseases within Canada.

The position oversees continuous upgrading of existing tests and the development of new tests (multiplex assays and others) utilizing new and evolving diagnostic technologies. The position provides professional oversight on the diagnostic tests, reports laboratory findings, and is involved with communications with veterinary practitioners, pathologists, laboratories, and provincial and federal animal disease regulators in the Atlantic Region and nationally. The position contributes to limited teaching (the virology portion of Clinical Rotation). It is closely involved with diagnostic, surveillance, and proficiency research projects of the AVC Diagnostic Services in partnerships with academic institutions in Canada, industry, and government agencies with regard to diagnostic testing, diagnostic test development, and surveillance and proficiency testing programs.


Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (Virology) Diplomate status (or board eligibility), be a DVM with eligibility for licensure by the PEIVMA, and have experience in veterinary virology diagnostic testing and interpretation.

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with the collective agreement.
