The Department of Sociology / Anthropology the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for Sessional Instructors for the Winter 2021 Semester. We are seeking instructors to teach the following courses in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. These positions are subject to final budgetary approval. The following courses are all being offered Online for the Winter 2021 Semester.

Sociology-2900 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL WORK

This course provides students with an overview of the foundations and practice of social work. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the historical development of social work in Canada, what social workers do, the setting and methods used as part of social work and the opportunities available to professionally trained social workers. The course includes an evaluation of emerging issues and future directions. Three hours per week

Sociology and Anthropology  2120 PEOPLES OF SOUTH ASIA

This course offers a survey of the peoples of South Asia by providing an integrated description and analysis of their cultural histories. Contemporary economic, social and political issues that inform daily life within South Asia and the geopolitics of the region will be important themes. The course will cover issues of gender, ethnicity, class and caste. Three hours per week

Sociology and Anthropology 2520 AGING AND SOCIETY

This is an introduction to the study of aging which provides an overview of the field of social gerontology, the variation of individual aging within societies and the social structures of aging. Special emphasis will be given to social gerontology in the Maritime Provinces. Three hours per week

Sociology and Anthropology 2630 GLOBAL YOUTH CULTURES

The emergence of global youth cultures of desire, self-expression, consumption and representation will be considered from a number of perspectives including gender, age and globalization. Issues related to youth, which are a critical factor in understanding contemporary change, conflict, and cleavages, will be explored cross- culturally. Attention will be given to theoretical developments as well as ethnographic case studies. Three hours per week

Sociology and Anthropology 3590 Special Topic INDIGENOUS HEALTH AND WELLNESS

In this course students will be introduced to the determinants of Indigenous peoples’ health in Canada, and focus primarily on Indigenous world-views, practices, and outcomes. Using cultural, anthropological, sociological, students will develop a thorough understanding of approaches to health one of the most significant issues that define the lives of Indigenous peoples within Canada. Three hours per week

Sociology 3090-1 QUALITATIVE METHODS

This course focuses on qualitative social research methods utilized to obtain information or data that responds to questions about the social world. Sociology 3090-1 will explore the social world in the Canadian context and enable students to gain appreciation of a wide range of qualitative methods, its theoretical underpinnings, and practical instruction on conducting qualitative research in the field. Three hours per week

Qualifications:

Successful applicants will have a graduate degree or a doctoral degree in Sociology or Anthropology and evidence of effectiveness in teaching at the university level.

Preference will be given to qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI Sessional Roster in the academic unit.
