The UPEI English Language Centre is seeking an Academic Coordinator for the Spring/Summer Explore Programs. The UPEI English Language Centre will offer two Explore Summer Language programs in 2020 for Canadian and International students; a spring program for those 19 years of age and older and a summer program for those 16 -17 years of age. 

The Explore Programs are two, 5-week EAL Programs for Canadian and International participants.  Participants have formal EAL lessons weekday mornings and organized socio-cultural activities during weekday evenings and weekends.  The Academic Coordinator will assist the Program Manager with administrative duties before the program in addition to over-seeing the daily operations of EAL classes and supporting a team of EAL teachers. 

*Please note that the program is currently planned to be held entirely in-person.  However, should the CPHO and the university implement new measures and restrictions due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, the program would switch to an online format.  Staff would be expected to work from the campus in Charlottetown.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Academic Coordinator reports directly to the Program Manager and is responsible for:

  • EAL Instruction
  • Providing academic support to EAL teachers
  • Overseeing the pre- and post-testing of students
  • Coordinating placement of students in class levels
  • Coordinating the preparation of final marks
  • Curriculum development
  • Coordinating the use of academic materials
  • Organizing an "Information Fair"
  • Ensuring academic standards are met
  • Running weekly teacher meetings
  • Participating in other scheduled staff meetings
  • Assisting with staff training
  • Assisting the Program Manager in preparation of final report
  • Acting as a role model to students
  • Upholding and enforcing the rules and regulations of the Explore Program
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Education, secondary focus
  • EAL teaching experience
  • Administrative and supervisory experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Experience with teaching online and using online platforms such as zoom
  • Previous experience with UPEI Explore Programs is an asset

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • EAL teaching certification
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Mental Health First Aid training
  • Leadership experience
