Postdoctoral Research Associate - School of Climate Change and Adaptation

The Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation (CCCCA) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is seeking one Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on several research projects related to transformative sustainable agriculture. The annual salary for this position is $50,000 (+benefits). The CCCCA is a 45,000 square-foot research facility located in the community of St. Peter’s Bay, PEI. The facility and the lands surrounding it serve as a living laboratory that allows for unlimited access to nearby wetlands, forests, and coastal habitats. The CCCCA is a world-leading research and teaching center in understanding and adapting to climate change impacts.
Contract: ASAP to December 31, 2027
The responsibilities of this position will include:
• Lead multiple research projects in precision agriculture, including sustainable agricultural land management, remote sensing applications for sustainable agriculture management, GHG emission monitoring in agricultural fields, assessing climate change impacts on agricultural production and exploring climate adaptation pathways
• Conduct research aligned with the strategic directions, focusing on mitigation strategies for climate change, land use analysis and sustainable land management, computational and GIS-based analysis, calibrating and maintaining field sensors, preparing, processing, and analyzing field data, and collecting field samples across Atlantic Canada
• Apply empirical, computational, and advanced machine/deep learning approaches to develop sustainable agriculture management practices for Atlantic Canada’s agriculture sector
• Support and assist teaching and course development (workshops, seminars, hands-on training, demonstrations, etc.) in areas such as climate change, sustainable BMPs, remote sensing, and land use and land cover management.
• Publish research findings in high-impact journals and prepare project reports and research proposals.
• Organize academic and professional activities, including meetings, webinars, and conferences
• Supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research and academic development
The successful candidate for this position should meet the following criteria:
• Holds a PhD degree in sustainable design engineering or a related field
• Have published peer-reviewed papers in the top-tier journals in the field of land use analysis, climate and/or agriculture
• Proficient in piloting and data acquisition using UAVs for sustainable agricultural and land use applications (e.g., crop monitoring, soil analysis and land use change analysis)
• Skilled in utilizing remote sensing data, such as satellite imagery and aerial photographs, to analyze agricultural and environmental factors
• Have experience with various software tools, such as R, ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, MATLAB, etc.
• In-depth knowledge of analyzing research data using advanced statistical, geospatial, and modelling techniques
• Able to work on collecting soil, crop, yield, and sensor data from lab and field environments
• Be self-motivated and have strong written and oral communication skills
• Willing to collaborate and work with an interdisciplinary research team; and
• Prior research experience about PEI’s climate change issues (this is not required, but will be a great asset for consideration)
