The Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island has openings for sessional instructors to teach the following courses in Fall 2023. The offering of these courses is conditional pending final enrolment numbers. All positions are subject to final budgetary and administrative approval.

Please note: the courses offered below will be taught in person, unless otherwise specified as an online course.

ED-3730-99 - Inclusion and Differentiation in Adult Learning

In this course, learners are introduced to inclusive education and to strategies and practices for supporting diverse learners in adult education contexts. The course gives an overview of learning differences, social/emotional/mental health, and diagnoses that impact learning. It also provides suggestions for teaching strategies to encourage adults to learn from their strengths and increase independence. Of particular interest are the use of assistive technology, self-advocacy, principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and awareness of services available to adult learners.

This course is taught on campus on Mondays from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, from September 11 to December 4, 2023.


ED-4280-3 - Math au primaire 2 (1 French section)

A continuation of Education 4230, this course further examines and extends the pedagogy of Primary/Elementary focusing on how children conceptualize mathematics and instructional methods required to foster children’s numeracy skills.

This course is offered in French to students in the Primary/Elementary stream of our Bachelor of Education (français langue seconde) program on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00pm – 4:00pm, September 18 to October 20.
 

ED-4470-2 - Intermediate/Senior Science 2 (1 bilingual section)

This course examines the development, nature, and limitations of science and technology; the role of science and technology in society; and the teaching of science and technology in the schools. Time is devoted to an examination of the provincial science curricula, innovative teaching and assessment strategies and techniques, and the development of active learning opportunities.

This course is offered to students in the Intermediate/Senior stream of our Bachelor of Education programs.  As the students in this course will be from both the French and English programs, instructors must be able to assess all written assignments in either official language.  The course is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, September 18 to October 20.


ED-4900-3 - L’intégration de la langue au contenu (1 French section)

This course will provide a foundation for the integration of language and content taught in French first and second language programs. Through examination and application of different models, students will develop competence in the integration of context and language.

This course is offered in French to students in the Bachelor of Education (français langue seconde) program on Mondays* and Wednesdays, 1:00pm to 4:00pm, September 18 to October 20. (*Where class falls on a holiday Monday in this timeframe, the class will be held on the following Friday).
 

ED-6030-60 - Instructional & Assessment Practices for Inclusive Education

This course involves the examination of theoretical and practical aspects regarding inclusive strategies and practices for diverse learners in educational settings. The principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) will be examined in relation to instructional methods, materials, activities, and evaluation procedures for diverse learners.

This course is offered to students in our MEd Focus on Global Perspectives on Tuesdays from 8:30am to 11:30am, September 6 to December 6.


ED-6130-31 - Qualitative Research Design

In this course, students study the development of qualitative research methodology and explore approaches drawn from this model that are used frequently by educational researchers. Students examine the use of observational techniques, interviews, questionnaires, and personal and official documents. Students design studies using qualitative methods.

This course is offered online to students in our MEd Special Cohort for College Educators and Leaders from September 6 to December 6.
 

ED-6140-65 - Theories of Research & Learning

In this course, students address the role of theory in educational research. The aim is to familiarize graduate students with various theoretical frameworks including theories and principles of learning.

This course is offered to students in our MEd Focus on Global Perspectives on Thursdays from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, September 6 to December 6.


ED-6150-70 - Educational Leadership

In this course, students examine the field of educational leadership. Educational leadership extends beyond the role of the school administrator and focuses upon the development of teachers as leaders who impact on creating effective educational environments. Students research aspects of leadership that impact on schools and explore models of effective leadership through case studies and simulation.

This course is offered to students in our MEd Focus on Global Perspectives on Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am, September 6 to December 6.
 

ED-6170-65 - Issues in Educational Leadership

In this course, students examine current issues in educational leadership. Students research the factors that influence educational leadership, such as socio-economic trends, school restructuring, curriculum development, and educational technology.

This course is offered to students in our MEd Focus on Global Perspectives on Tuesdays from 8:30am to 11:30am, September 6 to December 6.


ED-6180-28 - Learning, Leadership and Reflective Practice

In this course, students examine processes of reflective practice such as analytic problem-solving and self-assessment. Students research reflective practices that have made positive contributions to learning and leadership.

This course is offered online to students in our MEd Focus on Inclusive Education (Qualify for PEI Additional Designation) from September 6 to December 6.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have a Masters of Education degree.  Successful candidates will normally have school-based experience in a Canadian public K-12 system.  For applicants without school-based experience, teaching in other contexts relevant and appropriate to the position will be considered. Applicants should have experience in teaching, research or practice related to the course content. Where courses are offered on-line using multi-media technologies, applicants will normally be able to demonstrate successful on-line teaching experience. 

French positions in the Faculty of Education are delivered completely in French.  Instructors must be proficient in reading, writing, and oral interaction in French.  All class work will be assessed in French.  Instruction in Bilingual positions in the Faculty of Education will not be required to be delivered in French; however, instructors must be able to assess all written assignments in either official language.

In addition, candidates applying to teach graduate courses will normally have established expertise, and successful leadership and/or teaching experience in a context related to the foci of the cohort.

Qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI Faculty of Education’s Sessional Roster and the Faculty’s full-time and term contract faculty members will be given priority.
