The Department of Health Management at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island, invites applications for a part-time, 5-month short-term contract position in our equine ambulatory service (AES). Appointment will be made at the Lecturer or Assistant Professor level, depending on qualifications and experience.

The AES is a field-based service providing top-tier primary equine services to clientele primarily on Prince Edward Island, with equine patients from PEI and the Maritimes also seen at the VTH on a truck-in basis. As well as providing clinical service, the AES also provides clinical teaching to final-year DVM students during rotations as part of the clinical year teaching program.

This term contract position would participate in clinical duties with AES colleagues as well as provide teaching in the form of lectures and laboratories to undergraduate veterinary students. Shared on-call duties are present on a rotating basis for the emergency services.

Required qualifications: 
•    The successful candidate will have a DVM (or equivalent) 
•    An applicant must be eligible for licensure with the Prince Edward Island Veterinary Medical Association.
•    Demonstrated initiative, collegiality, and professionalism with excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
•    The ability to utilize and assimilate clinical information to make decisions regarding patient care, in collaboration with horse owners. 
•    Must be willing and able to travel for patient care needs in the assigned region.
•    Be able to have a driver's license in PEI

Preferred qualifications:

Postgraduate training and board certification or eligibility (ACVS, ABVP, ASCVMR) is desirable but not a requirement of the position. A strong interest in veterinary education is also considered important, and preference is given to individuals who have worked with DVM students in an academic environment. A minimum of three years' experience working in equine practice and experience with standardbred racehorses is preferred.

The salary range is commensurate with credentials and experience.  A comprehensive fringe benefit package, with benefit details, will be provided at the time of offer in accordance with the collective agreement. This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.

The AVC is committed to teaching, research and service. The college is fully accredited by the CVMA and AVMA. The AVC is the regional veterinary college for Atlantic Canada and is situated on the country’s beautiful east coast. There are currently ~272 DVM students (65 students per year, which is increasing to 95 students per year in 2027) and ~55 graduate students, 85 full-time faculty, and a professional and technical team of ~250 dedicated individuals (including full- and part-time). The teaching hospital and its ancillary facilities are modern and well-equipped.
