The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Atlantic Veterinary College and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Prince Edward Island invite applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Comparative Medicine. Appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

The successful candidate will hold a cross-appointment between the Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Primary undergraduate teaching responsibilities will be in the Faculty of Medicine in one of several pre-clinical disciplines based on the candidate’s area of expertise. The candidate will be expected to develop a strong externally funded independent research program, teach graduate courses, and mentor graduate and undergraduate research students in Biomedical Sciences.

Qualifications:

The successful applicant will have:

  • PhD with relevant post-doctoral experience
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully implement research projects
  • Significant record of publications in a discipline relevant to departmental strengths
  • Demonstrated potential to obtain external research funding
  • Well-developed skills of collaboration, relationship-building, and communication

Members of the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) provide professional contributions to teaching, basic and applied research, and diagnostic service, particularly in animal physiology, microanatomy, pharmacology and toxicology, cell and molecular biology, and neuroscience. They also interact with other disciplines in veterinary medicine for the advancement of biomedical science applied to human and animal health. Modern laboratory facilities that include both dedicated and shared-use equipment for in vitro and in vivo investigations are available on-site. BMS offers accredited Master of Science and PhD degree programs and hosts world class laboratory and animal facilities with access to clinical veterinary specialty services.

The University of Prince Edward Island is establishing a Faculty of Medicine to house a joint Doctor of Medicine degree in partnership with the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN).

Unique in Canada, the new degree will bring together the strengths of both institutions—rural and family medicine from MUN, and nursing, clinical psychology, paramedicine, veterinary medicine, climate change and adaptation, and sustainable design engineering at UPEI. A UPEI Faculty of Medicine will increase training opportunities for future family doctors and general specialists and support the medical career aspirations of Island youth. This faculty position also provides increased opportunity for research collaboration between MUN and UPEI.

The University of Prince Edward Island is located in Charlottetown, PEI. The University fosters a collaborative, inter-disciplinary approach to research as well as opportunities to interact with an emerging government-supported cluster of small and medium sized bioscience companies. Charlottetown, a small historically rich city, combines a strong artistic tradition with an ethnically diverse culture and offers opportunities for very affordable urban or rural lifestyles in an environmentally and community-oriented social setting.

The salary is commensurate with credentials and experience. This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.
