Acknowledging that UPEI is located on the unceded land of the Mi’kmaq Nation, of the Wabanaki Confederacy, in the traditional district of Epekwitk, the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering (FSDE) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) welcomes applications from dynamic and motivated youths to support the development and implementation of community engagement and outreach activities as part of the FSDE’s Engineering Success Centre (ESC). This position reports to the Coordinator of the ESC. The ESC is seeking applications for one Student Assistant at 37.5h/week for 18 weeks of the Summer 2024.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Assistant will support the ESC’s Coordinator with:

  • Support the development and implementation of community engagement strategies focusing on underrepresented groups, namely youth in the Indigenous community in PEI.
  • Work closely with local Indigenous communities to understand their needs and interests, and to design and implement outreach activities that address these needs.
  • Organize and execute cultural events and initiatives aimed at fostering community involvement and engagement. This includes but is not limited to travelling and hosting events on Lennox Island First Nation or the Abegweit First Nation.
  • Collaborate with faculties, staff, and students to create and execute community outreach projects, leverage engineering principles to develop innovative solutions to improve community infrastructure and services.
  • Monitor, and report on the impact and success of outreach efforts.
  • Use digital skills to plan and organize events, conduct surveys, and analyze data.
  • Utilize numeracy and problem-solving skills to assist with budget management, coordinate logistics, and troubleshoot issues

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate students currently enrolled in a degree program at UPEI
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience in community engagement and outreach preferred.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous cultures and languages preferred.
  • Basic digital skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
  • Basic numeracy and problem-solving skills.
  • Preference will be given to applicants of Canadian Indigenous heritage
