Reporting to the Manager of Operations, the successful candidate works closely with instructors and technical staff within the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering. Duties would include providing mentorship, advice, input, and guidance to students in design. They would also act as safety lead for the FSDE as well as oversee the installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of manufacturing, material-handling, and testing equipment in the FSDE.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as the main engineering resource and mentor to design clinic projects, including other technicians, and students
  • Coordinate technical support for design clinic projects including procurement and the manufacturing of testing apparatus and prototypes
  • Provide advice, expertise and support in the design, setup and supervision for experimental labs and prototype testing associated with student design projects, and in the areas of machine and system performance measurement, experimental sensors, data acquisition and analysis and associated software
  • Overall responsibility, as Area Lead, for the FSDE Health and Safety program, including the development and implementation of policies and procedures; the management of training and certification of academic staff, other staff, and students; safety inspections; and compliance assurance
  • Coordinate the delivery of completed prototypes to industry clients
  • Assist in the coordination of equipment purchase, maintenance, and inventory
  • Assist in the procurement of materials and supplies
  • Work with research personnel and clients on industry-related projects
  • Perform instrumentation installation and data collection for industry-related research projects
  • Design and edit 3D models for use in additive manufacturing (e.g. 3D printing)
  • Adhere to a safe work environment

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor of Engineering or equivalent in a relevant field
  • Must be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Prince Edward Island
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of and experience with industrial equipment and operations related to one or more of these areas: bioresources, sustainable energy, advanced manufacturing, robotics and industrial automation, and intelligent sensors and systems in an industrial research and development environment
  • Experience with instrumentation and controls
  • Experience in a laboratory and shop environment
  • Demonstrated creative, communication, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task, coordinate projects and function professionally in a high- pressure, deadline-oriented environment
  • Excellent computer skills
