The Faculty of Education, University of Prince Edward Island, invites applications for the full-time position of School and Community Liaison for the UPEI Bachelor of Education programs which include the Bachelor of Education, and Bachelor of Education-français langue seconde.
Reporting directly to the Dean of Education and working as a member of the B.Ed. Leadership team, the School and Community Liaison establishes, manages, coordinates, and facilitates school and alternative community placements for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education programs including those in international and Indigenous contexts (in collaboration with the Coordinator of the BEd-fls for placements in French). The School and Community Liaison supports the BEd Coordinators with programmatic and administrative matters related to the Bachelor of Education programs and is a member of the Bachelor of Education Committees.
Approximately 250 placements (local, national, and international) are established in each academic year of the program. The School and Community Liaison communicates verbally and in writing with school district administrators, principals, and teachers as placements are negotiated and confirmed. The School and Community Liaison, working closely with the BEd Leadership team and members of the Faculty, will advise and support pre-service teachers and University-based advisors with regards to practicum in educational settings in PEI, across Canada and internationally. The School and Community Liaison plays a lead role in drafting, revising, disseminating, and implementing policies, guidelines and procedures associated with practice teaching including student assessment.

RESPONSIBILITIES RELATED TO PACTICUM:
- Fostering a positive relationship with local school boards, schools, and other relevant education stakeholders
- Liaising with education stakeholders to procure mutually effective student practicum placements
- Coordinating communication with pre-service teachers, practicum advisors, cooperating teachers, and school principals regarding practicum and laboratory school experiences (the actual communication with French-speaking stakeholders may be done by the Coordinator of the BEd-fls, in French, unless the School and Community Liaison is proficient in French)
- Coordinating and supporting the practicum supervision teams as they co-construct practicum course syllabi, including assessment criteria, expectations and processes for the practicum
- Ensuring that program handbooks and welcome packages are current (BEd and Practicum)
- Ensuring contracts and affiliation agreements with school/education partners, where required and appropriate, are processed and up to date, and updating these if needed. This includes contracts with schools in international and indigenous contexts
- Supporting students and advisors during the practicum and intervening with students experiencing significant difficulties during practicum
RESPONSIBILITIES RELATED TO THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION: PROGRAM LEADERSHIP:
- Playing a lead role with student recruitment (Open Houses, the annual PEITF convention, via social media etc) and pre-admission student advising
- Participating in the admissions process for future Bachelor of Education students
- Serving as Faculty liaison with the Bachelor of Education Student Society
- Along with other members of the BEd Leadership Team,
a) examining current policies and initiating new ones, especially with regards to practice teaching/practicum
b) building the Bachelor of Education annual calendar and timetable(s)
c) building and overseeing Bachelor of Education student orientations, including orientation for international and indigenous practicum placements and good-bye days and exit survey
d) assisting with curriculum mapping, program reviews, writing program modifications or new program proposals as required
e) advising the Dean on hiring sessional instructors for practicum advisors
f) providing a practicum update for the BEd report to Faculty Council - Guiding the gathering of data regarding the practicum component of the BEd Program and in other areas as requested by the Dean
- Serving as a member of Bachelor of Education Committees
- Playing a facilitative role in resolving student and/or instructor concerns
- Participating in faculty meetings and retreats
- Assisting prospective and in-program students with questions concerning required coursework for licensing and matters related to teacher certification
- Playing a key role with regards to awards and prizes for BEd students
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- The successful candidate will hold an undergraduate degree and master’s degree in education as well as a valid Canadian Teaching Certificate, and several years successful experience as a teacher/administrator
- Strong leadership skills and administrative/management and coordinating experience are required
- The ability to speak and work in French would be a strong asset
- Experience supervising and mentoring pre-service teachers, and teaching and doing curriculum development in a pre-service education program, are considered an advantage, as is a sound knowledge of the school system in PEI and in the rest of Canada
- Superior public relations, communication, and conflict resolution skills are required. The ability to deal sensitively and effectively with a wide range of individuals and the ability to maintain a positive demeanor are essential
- The successful candidate will have a commitment to decolonizing practices in teacher education and to the calls for action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
- An ability to act with the lens of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all facets of programming and decision making
- A knowledge of current trends in research on teacher education
- Demonstrate capacity to engage teaching practices which reflect current social and technological changes in education i.e. activist, anti-oppressive teaching approaches; use of AI in the classroom etc.
- Applicants must have own transportation and a valid driver’s license
- International travel or work experience will be considered an asset
- A clean criminal record and vulnerable sector check will also be required
