DSJS 2090: Experiments for a Hot Planet (Summer 2026 – May 11-22)
The Department of Diversity and Social Justice Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island has an opening for an Instructor for the Summer 2026 (May 11-22) semester for the following course. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.
This is an in-person course, currently scheduled to take place at both the St. Peter’s and Main campuses for full-day classes.
DSJS 2090 – Experiments for a Hot Planet is a short, intensive interdisciplinary course built around structured conversations, creative experiments, in-class and on-site curricular activities, and guest speakers / co-teaching. Delivered over six full days across a two-week period, the course brings students into sustained engagement with experts from the Faculty of Arts, scholars from other disciplines, and community members to consider what essential skills are needed to navigate socially and environmentally turbulent times. Through a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives, knowledges, and skills, this course asks students to explore critical relational and democratic capacities required for shared life on a warming planet. Issues to be examined include: queer ecology and environmental mourning; apocalyptic culture, climate fatigue, and the affective dynamics of environmental crisis; and critical analysis of how power, media, and institutions shape what counts as knowledge in climate discourse.
Qualifications:
Successful applicants should ideally hold a completed PhD in an interdisciplinary field relevant to social justice studies, environmental humanities, cultural studies, or another closely related area. Applicants should have a demonstrated expertise in environmental humanities, climate justice, or climate-related social justice scholarship, and should emphasize feminist, decolonial, Indigenous, anti-racist, and other anti-oppressive approaches to scholarship in these areas. Strong preference will be given to applicants who also have experience designing and delivering intensive, interdisciplinary undergraduate courses and whose approach to teaching integrates theory, practice, and reflective and creative methods of engagement.
Application Instructions:
Applicants should submit—via email only—a letter of application, an updated curriculum vitae, and the names of three references, in addition to any other materials they consider relevant, to:
