The Office of Student Culture and Community Standards is seeking applicants to fulfill ONE (1) high-profile leadership position as our university mascot Pride the Panther, for the upcoming academic year. Pride the Panther is a vital part of UPEI and serves as the physical manifestation of school spirit and institutional identity.  Pride the Panther is integral to the university, and this position supports campus culture by fostering belonging, enhancing student experiences and highlights to the community that we are all Panthers.  

The successful candidate will balance their time as Pride the Panther between physical appearances, contributing to strategic discussions on campus culture in addition to content preparation and creation for social media. This position is part of the Office of Student Culture and Community Standards and will report to the Student Engagement Officer and the Manager of Student Culture and Community Standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Physically attend assigned events and actively engage attendees, lead crowd cheers and enhance engagement initiatives.
  • Champion Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with Marketing, Athletics, Alumni, Residence, Student Union and Student Support teams and Faculties to develop event "runs-of-show" and marketing scripts.
  • Manage Program Initiatives: Contribute to the ideation, design, and strategic scoping of the mascot program's brand evolution.
  • Create content and engage with the campus community and beyond through dedicated Pride the Panther social media channels.  
  • Develop Non-Verbal and Spatial Communication: Master the unique skill of motivating, calming, and commanding large crowds through their use of physical, empathetic engagement.
  • Serve as a Campus Peer Mentor: Act as an official ambassador for school spirit, collaborating with volunteer "Mascot Handlers" and fostering student leadership networks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be in the Final year of study at UPEI
  • Self-motivated UPEI student, with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in creating content for social media
  • Excellent organization, time management and communication skills
  • Previous experience working with students and youth considered an asset
  • Experience as a performer is an asset.
  • Physically able and willing to wear and perform in a large costume.
  • Willingness and availability to work odd hours, including evening and weekend work, as required for special events.

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
