The Robertson Library is seeking applications for a qualified individual to work under the direction of the Digital Initiatives Librarian. The successful candidate will work with library staff to prepare and upload new additions to the free digital newspaper archive islandnewspapers.ca.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working with newspapers on microfilm from a number of decades, the successful candidate will:

  • Digitize archival microfilm using a professional quality microfilm scanner
  • Process scanned images
  • Prepare metadata spreadsheets about the items scanned
  • Ensure that scans and data meet quality standards
  • Work on other quality assurance tasks
  • Load content into the Library’s digital asset management system
  • Track work in a project management software
  • Assist with other tasks in the Digitization Lab as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Comfortable with MacOS and Windows operating systems and file management (eg. moving, copying, organizing files)
  • Experience with image editing software
  • Experience with Google Apps (eg. Google Sheets, Docs, Drive, etc..)
  • Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive work while ensuring careful attention to detail
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to take direction
  • Ability to work independently

ASSETS:

  • Experience using scanners and/or photographic equipment
  • Experience with a web-based content management like Drupal
  • Knowledge of the Islandora Digital Asset Management System

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for the Young Canada Works program:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada (Note: Non-Canadian students or graduates holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.)
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment
  • Will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment
  • Have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment
  • Intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment
  • Be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory (instructions for registration are found on the Young Canada Works website)

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
