The Department of Animal Resources is looking for an individual to manage the day-to-day operation of the research and teaching animal facilities associated with the Atlantic Veterinary College - specifically the Central Animal Facility that houses ruminants, dogs, cats, and horses, including outside paddocks. The North Annex Facility that houses rodents, and the Aquatic Animal Facility for containment level 1 and 2 research work.  Manage a technical staff of 7 people. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct supervision of staff, including involvement in the selection process, scheduling, approving overtime, and performance management of staff within Animal Resources
  • Oversee animal care activities of all aquatic and mammalian species in compliance with the Canadian Council on Animal Care
  • Forecast, plan, and execute space allocation and acquisition of animals for UPEI researchers and teaching needs
  • Oversee design and maintenance of animal holding systems for mammalian, fresh and saltwater fish environments
  • Oversee and execute health monitoring and disease control programs as outlined by university veterinarians
  • Assist in the development and oversee the compliance of animal care associated Standard Operation Procedures (SOP)s
  • Costing, budgeting, purchasing, and assisting with quotations for research projects and special projects

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.Sc and equivalent experience with Animal Care in a Research or Academic setting
  • 3-5 years of experience with aquatic housing and care of fresh and saltwater fish
  • Experience with large animals an asset
  • Management training in a unionized workplace would be an asset
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a team member is required
  • Effective interpersonal relationship skills with demonstrated ability to lead and motivate is required
  • Excellent working knowledge of a variety of software applications such as MS word and Excel
  • Excellent planning and organization skills, thoroughness and attention to detail are needed
