Head Impact Demo System, Dr. Bill Montelpare
Dr. Bill Montelpare, who holds the Margaret and Wallace McCain Chair in Human Development and Health at UPEI, has requested assistance in designing a demonstration system. The system will be used to help him further children's education in the field of science.
Dr. Montelpare's studies are currently focused on the effects of head impact in sports, especially concussions. Concussions are common in adolescents that play sports and can have short-term or long-term effects. They are often underreported due to the lack of knowledge on this topic, and can have severe symptoms if not taken care of properly. He has previously gone to classrooms and given presentations to students around the age of 10. However, the last presentation he gave, did not involve much hands on experience for the children. Because of this, he felt it did not have as large of an impact on the students as desired. In an attempt to involve the children more, and provide a memorable presentation, we are to design a system. The system should incorporate a newly developed design and provide a visual output. The mechanism should involve many mechanical aspects and components.
Most importantly, it should get the children involved and demonstrate the effects of head impacts in an interesting manner. The point of this research and why this project could be so important is it illustrates the major effects going on in sports right now. It also provides them with some knowledge of mechanics and dynamics, while teaching them that wearing helmets is beneficial.
