UPEI statement regarding request for conciliation
The University of Prince Edward Island has been advised that the UPEI Faculty Association has requested that the Minister of Workforce and Advanced Learning appoint a conciliation officer to assist in negotiations for Bargaining Units 1 and 2.
The University respects the Faculty Association's right to make this request under the PEI Labour Act.
A request for, and associated appointment of, a conciliation officer is a normal step available under Prince Edward Island's Labour Act. It does not end negotiations; rather, conciliation is intended to assist the parties in resolving outstanding issues and reaching collective agreements.
The matters identified by the Faculty Association as having reached impasse remain subject to live proposals and are under active discussion. Additionally, at the Association's request, the parties have not yet exchanged any monetary proposals.
Should the Minister appoint a conciliation officer, the University will participate fully in that process and continue to work constructively toward negotiated agreements. The University remains committed to bargaining in good faith and to working toward renewed collective agreements that support faculty members, students, and UPEI’s long-term success.
