The UPEI Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre has created a new award for Indigenous students attending the University, with support from the Government of Prince Edward Island.

The Engaging with Culture Award is designed to help current Indigenous students, their families, and support people attend ceremonies and cultural gatherings by alleviating financial concerns. The funding amount awarded will vary according to need.

“Whether a student needs $100 to purchase material for regalia or $2,000 to attend a multi-day gathering out of province, this program is designed to help them get there,” said Jasmine Pauze, coordinator of the Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre.

The award can be used for travel, accommodations, and food costs for an applicant and their support person as long as they are a currently enrolled Indigenous student at UPEI. Applications are now open and will be accepted until December 1, 2023. Applicants must complete an online assessment and then attend an in-person appointment to review their application and determine the supports needed. They must also submit a research document that outlines what they need to attend a gathering.

Eligible students can apply for the award at https://www.upei.ca/mawiomi-centre/scholarships
