UPEI is excited to participate once again in Bell Let's Talk Day. Our hope is that—by offering activities, supports, and services throughout the year—we will build a culture of care that nurtures and celebrates mental health and wellness of everyone in the UPEI ‘family’.

Mental illness affects people of all ages and from all walks of life. According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health issue or illness in any given year. Over the past nine years, Canadians and people around the globe have joined in the world’s largest conversation around mental health on Bell Let’s Talk Day to reduce the stigma around mental health issues. In a recent survey conducted by Nielsen Consumer Insights in 2019, 84 per cent of Canadians now say they are comfortable speaking with others about mental health, compared to only 42 per cent in 2012.

However, there is still work to be done to ensure all Canadians have access to the mental health support they need. This year on Bell Let’s Talk Day, Canadians are encouraged to share the actions, large and small, that they are taking to improve the lives of people living with mental health issues. That’s why UPEI is joining in on the 10th annual Bell Let’s Talk Day—to help create positive change.

From 10:00 am–2:00 pm, UPEI will be hosting two Bell Let's Talk Swag, Info & Photo Booths—one in the W.A Murphy Student Centre Concourse and one in the Robertson Library Breezeway. Staffed by UPEI volunteers, members of the campus community can drop by to grab a toque, snap a photo, add to the Bell Let’s Talk Wall, and join the conversation!

From 11:30 am–1:00 pm, the UPEI Student Union and the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Research are hosting Soup for the Soul at the Chaplaincy Centre. Soup for the Soul began in 2015 as a way to offer healthy food in a comfortable environment. Round tables are conducive to conversation with mellow music adding to the atmosphere. Drop by for a warm bowl of soup with a roll (Real butter tops it all off.)

Bell Let’s Talk Day at UPEI will be capped off when the UPEI Women’s Hockey team faces off against the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues at 7:00 pm in MacLauchlan Arena at the Bell Aliant Centre. Admission is by donation in honour of Bell Let's Talk, with proceeds going to the Canadian Mental Health Association PEI Division. Go Panthers go!

When it comes to mental health, every action counts.

On Bell Let’s Talk Day, for every text, mobile, and long-distance call made on the Bell network; tweet using #BellLetsTalk, social media video view; or use of the Facebook frame or Snapchat filter, Bell will contribute 5 cents more to Canadian mental health programs. Join in as we work together to improve the lives of Canadians living with mental health issues and help create positive change.
