Background: This scholarship was established by colleagues, family and friends of Constable Bernard Mullally who died in a tragic car accident while on duty in 1973. Constable Mullally was twenty-two years old at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife Darlene and two-year-old daughter Kelly. In 2004, Constable Mullally was recognized as the only police officer to die in the line of duty in this province. He was given special recognition at the Annual Atlantic Police and Correctional Officers Memorial Services held in 1999 and again in 2000, where his name was added to the Honour Roll in Memory of Officers Killed in the Line of Duty. This bursary provides a permanent public memorial to Constable Mullally. Constable Mullally's family and those of us who knew him feel that this is a very fitting tribute to a man who cared about young people and was always willing to offer a helping hand.
