Description: Awarded to a Nursing student who, in the second year of the Nursing program, has demonstrated clinical excellence in the care of children and families while maintaining an average of at least 75% in the two Nursing courses of that year (N213 and N223).
Background: This prize is established at the University of Prince Edward Island by Eileen and Lawson Drake. Eileen (Jay) Drake completed Second Year at Prince of Wales College (PWC) in 1950 and graduated from thePrince Edward Island Hospital School of Nursing in 1953, being awarded the prize in Pediatric Nursing. Sheworked at the Polyclinic in Charlottetown; the Geneva General Hospital, Geneva, New York; the Tompkins CountyMemorial Hospital, Ithaca, New York; The Dr. Eric Found Health Centre, Ch arlottetown; and in private duty andhome care nursing. She retired in 1988. Lawson Drake graduated from PWC in 1948 and from McGill University (Macdonald College) in 1950. In 1959 hereceived his Masters degree from Cornell University and returned to PWC to teach Biology until 1966. From1963 to 1966 his teaching duties included Anatomy and Physiology for students in the Prince Edward IslandHospital School of Nursing. After receiving his Ph.D. from Dalhousie University in 1969, he became the firstChair of the Biology Department at UPEI. Dr. Drake served as Dean of Science from 1985 t o 1991; as Dean hechaired the Nursing Education Transition Committee whose work established the School of Nursing at UPEI. Heretired in 1994. The Drakes believe that the nursing care of infants and children demands special qualities of professionalism,compassion and commitment. To encourage the development of these qualities in student nurses they have madethis prize available to a nursing student demonstrating excellence in child and family care.
