| Description: | Awarded to a first-year student graduating from a PEI high school who is of good character, as demonstrated through extracurricular activity, and is pursuing 10 courses (30 semester-hours) from September to May in the Faculty of Arts. |
| Background: | This award was established by his family in honour of George Edward Hart, B.A., M.A., M.Ed., born in PEI in 1914 and whose family has been connected with the Island for 200 years. Mr. Hart wrote "Transcontinental Pedestrians" which was launched in 2006. www.transcontinentalpedestrians.com Following early education at West Kent School, Mr. Hart was a student (1930-1932) at Prince of Wales College, one of UPEI's predecessor institutions. He went on to become a teacher (Coleman, PEI and Prince Street School), broadcaster, and actor in PEI, and wrote a history of PEI "The Story of Old Abegweit: a Sketch of Prince Edward Island History" (available in Robertson Library). He and his sisters, Gladys and Esther were born to George Frederick Hart (born: London, England) and Jennie Gorrill (Tyne Valley ). His family tree also includes the surnames Rayner and Simmons (Rayner's Creek, Traveller's Rest and St. Eleanor's), Williams, Ellis, and Watson. Mr. Hart served with Canada's navy in World War II and has been awarded Overseas Military Service Medal (Second World War); the Confederation Centennial Medal, Canada (1967); and Queen's Jubilee Medal (1977). He also was part of the founding of the United Way in Charlottetown, Halifax, and Montreal. His family has created this entrance award in honour of Mr. Hart |
