Description: Granted to a returning UPEI student in any level of full-time study who is from a developing country (as identified each year by the International Monetary Fund and/or United Nations), resident in Canada, and is in the greatest need. Preference will be given to students who arrived in Canada as a refugee.
Background: Founded by World University Service of Canada (WUSC) in 1978, the Student Refugee Program (SRP) has sponsored over 1,600 refugee youth from 37 countries of asylum to study in Canada. This uniquely Canadian, youth-led sponsorship program is the only one in the world that combines refugee resettlement with post-secondary education. WUSC has been operating at UPEI since 1984. Since the program?s inception, the UPEI community has sponsored 24 students to study at our university as landed immigrant. The SRP?s youth-to-youth sponsorship model aims to provide a positive integration process for SRP students, and engage students at Canadian institutions on global issues, helping to create welcoming communities for newcomers. It is in this spirit of peer to peer assistance, and global engagement that the UPEI Student WUSC Scholarship has been established.
