The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at University of Prince Edward Island is proud to name Sandra Irving and the late Arthur Irving as the recipients of the 2025 Honourable Eugene F. Whelan Green Hat Award, the highest recognition bestowed by the College.

The Green Hat Award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made a substantial and positive impact on AVC and its mission. Sandra and Arthur Irving have been steadfast supporters of AVC for decades, helping to advance veterinary education, research, and clinical care through their remarkable generosity and commitment to student success. They were announced as the award winners at the College’s 2025 Fall Awards and Recognition Night on October 1, 2025.

“Arthur and Sandra Irving's unwavering commitment to education and community has left an indelible mark on our institution,” said Dr. Dominique Griffon, Dean of AVC. “Their generosity has strengthened our facilities, enhanced the experience of our clients and patients, and opened doors for countless students pursuing careers in animal health.”

Among their many contributions to AVC is a transformational $1 million gift that supported the creation of the Arthur and Sandra Irving Community Care Clinic at AVC’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Completed in 2014, the project transformed key areas of the hospital, creating more modern and welcoming spaces while enhancing the experience for everyone who learns, works, and receives care at AVC.

Sandra and Arthur Irving have demonstrated an enduring commitment to education and student success through their generous scholarship support, helping to remove financial barriers and creating opportunities for countless students. Beyond their philanthropy, they inspired young people to pursue their passions, take pride in their communities, and strive for excellence while remaining connected to their roots.

“Many students who benefited from their generosity have gone on to make meaningful contributions in their professions and communities, reflecting values that resonate deeply within the AVC community and its tradition of producing graduates who make a lasting impact,” said Dr. Griffon.

Established in 2000, the Green Hat Award is named in honour of the late Honourable Eugene F. Whelan, Canada’s Minister of Agriculture for over a decade, whose leadership was instrumental in the creation of AVC.
