The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering is seeking a student research assistant.

In the Future Urban Energy Lab for Sustainability (FUEL-S), this project intends to explore the feasibility of designing a concrete-based high-temperature thermal storage for building energy applications. During the surplus energy generation from renewables, the energy can be used to heat the concrete to a high temperature due to desirable thermal mass characteristics. Further, during the building energy deficit, the thermal energy stored in concrete-based storage can be extracted to serve thermal and power demands.

The work involves computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and simulations using ANSYS Fluent to evaluate various parameters such as the charging and discharging behavior of concrete-based thermal storage. The synchronization potential of the storage with building load requirements will be explored as well. Thereafter, based on the feasibility, the conceptual design of a solid-state-based combined heat and power generation and storage system will be proposed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform CFD modeling and simulation of thermal energy storage

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • UPEI Student, preferably in 3rd year or 4th year
  • Must understand ANSYS Fluent, SolidWorks, and MATLAB
  • Must have a strong attention to detail

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
