The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering is seeking a student research assistant to help establish the workflow of automated neighborhood energy modeling intending clean energy planning.

Urban areas are expected to account for over 70% of the world's energy-related CO2 emissions by 2050. The importance of energy system planning in cities gained popularity and can play a vital role in mitigating GHG emissions and the transition to a clean energy economy. As cities become more aware of the climate change impacts and the need for sustainable energy strategies, they often require the proper tools and methods to develop their local urban energy systems. In the Future Urban Energy Lab for Sustainability (FUEL-S), this job intends to establish a neighborhood energy modeling workflow that employs or integrates various techniques such as artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), GIS data (OpenStreetMap, Google map, etc.), engineering methods, and drone collected data together to form the detailed neighborhood energy models (NEM). The goal of this research is to predict the hourly yearlong neighborhood energy demand profiles (electrical and thermal loads).

  • UPEI Student, preferably in 3rd year or 4th year
  • Building energy modeling (i.e., EnergyPlus, Grasshopper, Ladybug, etc.), Artificial intelligence (AI), computer programming
