Dr. Terri Jackson is looking for a graduate student to assist with a project that explores learning centre classrooms on Prince Edward Island. The proposed research will explore how to best support the teachers in the new Learning Centre classrooms (created by the Public Schools Branch). In this pilot year, the researcher will build an understanding of how the Learning Centre classrooms run, and the role these play in supporting students. This research requires the incumbent to travel to a school on the island and spend a half day there weekly. It therefore requires extensive knowledge of K-12 education. The primary activities of the successful candidate will involve collaboration, instructional coaching, and mentoring. It requires in-person meetings in schools on a weekly basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Weekly in-person collaborations with supervisor and K-12 school staff to support the learning centre classroom and to discuss progress to be scheduled during school hours
  • Collection and analysis of qualitative data
  • Drafting of reports
  • Possible presentation of findings at local and national conferences

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a current Graduate student at UPEI
  • Strong understanding of the principles of inclusive special education and how they operate in the K-12 context
  • Capacity in mentoring and coaching educators
  • Experience collecting observational data and using questioning strategies
  • Strong reflective practices
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely in English for academic purposes, and adjust writing based on mentoring and editing from supervisor
  • Skilled in quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis
  • Interest and experience in inclusive education and capacity-building initiatives
  • Must have a means to travel to the learning centre site weekly; mileage costs will be reimbursed at the rate prescribed by UPEI
