The Department of Health Management at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island, invites applications for a full-time, permanent, tenure-track faculty position in large-animal internal medicine.

Appointment will be made at the Assistant Professor level.

The successful applicant will join an established large animal medicine team. Job duties include teaching in graduate and undergraduate programs, providing clinical service, providing university service, and conducting research. The successful candidate will join a team of three DACVIM faculty members (2.5 FTE), two ACVIM-trained medicine residents, and one ABVP (equine focus)-trained practitioner resident. The medicine team is heavily involved in teaching undergraduate veterinary students in the preclinical and clinical years.

The large animal hospital serves the surrounding Atlantic provinces, seeing mainly referral cases (routine appointments and emergencies) and some primary care cases. The hospital's caseload consists primarily of equine cases but also sees a substantial caseload (around 25%) of farm animals, mainly calves, small ruminants, and pigs. Hospital duties include out-of-hours emergency duty, which is divided amongst all the members of the large animal medicine team. In addition, the Maritime Quality Milk Laboratory at AVC provides specialized diagnostic services to regional veterinarians and producers.

This center supports research that focuses on:
•    Bovine infectious diseases (such as Johne's disease and Bovine Leukosis Virus)
•    Antimicrobial stewardship and mastitis diagnostic tools
•    Bulk tank milk quality monitoring

Required qualifications:

The successful candidate must have a DVM (or equivalent) degree and must be eligible for ACVIM/ECEIM board certification. An applicant must be eligible for licensure with the Prince Edward Island Veterinary Medical Association and be a member of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. The applicant must be comfortable with advanced medical care of large animals, both for elective and emergency cases. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning, including a strong potential for scholarship and research.

Preferred qualifications:

ACVIM certification is preferred, but ECVIM and board-eligible candidates will be considered. The candidate should also have an interest in research, and preference will be given to candidates with an advanced research degree. A strong interest in veterinary education is also important.

The salary range is commensurate with credentials and experience. Full-time faculty members receive a comprehensive fringe benefit package, with benefit details provided at the time of offer in accordance with the collective agreement. This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.

The AVC is committed to teaching, research and service. The college is fully accredited by the CVMA and AVMA. The AVC is the regional veterinary college for Atlantic Canada and is situated on the country’s beautiful east coast. There are currently ~280 DVM students (70 students per year, which is increasing to 95 students per year in 2027) and ~55 graduate students, 85 full-time faculty, and a professional and technical team of ~250 dedicated individuals (including full- and part-time). The teaching hospital and its ancillary facilities are modern and well-equipped.
