We acknowledge that Mi’kma’ki is the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people, who, in 1725 first signed the Treaties of Peace and Friendship with the British Crown. Those treaties did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources, but instead recognized Mi’kmaq title and negotiated a path toward an ongoing relationship between nations. We acknowledge we carry out our daily work in Mi’kma’ki.

The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. This position represents an outstanding opportunity to play a foundational and transformational role in the future development and provision of healthcare in Prince Edward Island. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023, or on a date mutually agreed upon.

In October 2021, it was announced that the University of Prince Edward Island would establish a Faculty of Medicine to house a joint Doctor of Medicine degree in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland. The new degree will bring together the strengths of both institutions—rural and family medicine, nursing, clinical psychology, paramedicine, veterinary medicine, climate change and adaptation, and sustainable design engineering. These strengths will position UPEI uniquely in One Health, a new paradigm of health education that connects human health with animal and environmental health. The Faculty of Medicine will increase training opportunities for future family doctors and general specialists and support the medical career aspirations of Island youth.

Construction of a new five-storey 135,000 square-foot facility that houses the Faculty of Medicine on the UPEI campus is expected to begin in late 2022, including advanced equipment and technology for distance learning in partnership with Memorial University. The new Faculty of Medicine at UPEI will initially provide seats for 20 Island students annually, including at least one seat for an Indigenous student, beginning in August 2024. Given the unique needs of PEI’s population, the emphasis will be on generalists, with an ideal mix of 50:50 family doctors and general specialists. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, a new curriculum will be developed to adequately prepare the doctors of the future.

Qualifications:

The founding Dean will report to the UPEI Vice-President, Academic and Research, and to a UPEI/Memorial Executive team. This executive team will include the Dean of Medicine at Memorial, UPEI Vice-President, Academic and Research, and the Provost and Vice President (Academic) at Memorial and will report to the presidents of both universities.  The ideal candidate will have deep understanding of the provision of medical education and extensive experience in academic program development. They will also bring an eagerness to proactively engage externally with the provincial healthcare system, medical community, and broader population, to ensure the successful development of the program.

The Dean’s salary is determined by the UPEI / UPEIFA Collective Agreement and an additional decanal stipend with an expectation of a partial clinical appointment. The salary range for this position is $300,000 to $340,000.

Application Instructions:

The University of Prince Edward Island is partnering with the executive search firm Perrett Laver on this search.
