The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications to the Department of Chemistry for consideration for a tenure track position in Natural Products Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level to commence July 1, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of this Position and the Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at UPEI is committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching and the successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in organic and natural products chemistry and related areas, including biotechnology depending on the expertise and interest of the successful candidate.  It is expected that the successful faculty member will develop a vigorous research program that will attract external funding and interface with local commercial activity.  Applications from all areas of Natural Products Chemistry will be considered.

The Department of Chemistry has an enthusiastic and active faculty, with vibrant research profiles and dedication to undergraduate and graduate teaching and training.  We offer Chemistry Majors, Honours, and Masters programs as well as an interdisciplinary PhD program in Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences. The Department is housed in a modern teaching and research facility, opened in 1996, and is well equipped with modern instrumentation including a 300 MHz FT-NMR, a 400 MHz NMR with a cryoprobe, TGA, DSC, and GC-MS.  In addition, researchers in the Department have access to a 600 MHz NMR and state of the art high resolution MS-MS instruments through industry and government partners on or near campus. The successful candidate will have access to a well-equipped laboratory which includes gloveboxes, a solvent purification system, and GPC.  The Department also maintains close ties to the NRC and AAFC institutes in Charlottetown, with opportunities for research collaborations.  For more information, please see the departmental web page at http://www.upei.ca/chemistry/

The Department of Chemistry has maintained strong ties to local industrial chemistry activities through entrepreneurial faculty members who have built small and large companies and have participated in the PEI Bioalliance (https://peibioalliance.com) organization. The successful candidate will be asked to continue to provide leadership in maintaining these connections and helping to develop current and future programs that will enable our students to access opportunities in natural products and related industries here in PEI and afar.

Statements and Information

The University of Prince Edward Island campus is in the provincial capital of Charlottetown, a bustling tourist destination that boasts the amenities of a much larger city, including excellent theatre, galleries, music, and dining possibilities. A province-wide hiking and biking trail runs right along the UPEI campus, and the National Park beaches and world-famous golf courses are a short drive away. Charlottetown and its surrounding communities offer charming and affordable housing options, a low crime rate, and an urban or semi-rural lifestyle that is second-to-none.

The land on which the University of Prince Edward Island is located is Epekwitk, the traditional and current territory of the Mi’kmaq People of this region. It is one of seven traditional Mi’kmaq regions that comprise Atlantic Canada, parts of eastern Quebec, and Maine. Mi’kma’ki is the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people, who, in 1725 first signed the Treaties of Peace and Friendship with the British Crown. Those treaties did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources, but instead recognized Mi’kmaq title and negotiated a path toward an ongoing relationship between nations. We acknowledge that we carry out our daily work and learning in Mi’kma’ki.
