MTS Level 7 - Laboratory Coordinator - Faculty of Science
$69,804-$76,440 per annum pro-rated to term, as per CUPE 1870
10 months per annum (August-May)
The Department of Biology at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for the position of Laboratory Coordinator. This position coordinates, prepares, sets up, manages, and helps instruct laboratory periods in both field-related courses (that may include but are not limited to BIO 1010 Environmental Biology, BIO 2220 Ecology, and BIO 2020 Botany) and laboratory-intensive courses (that may include but are not limited to BIO 3520 Molecular Biology Research Techniques and BIO 3260 Cell and Organism Physiology). The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of molecular biology techniques. Prior experience with cell biology, botany, or organismal physiology will be considered an asset.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Helping to instruct a suite of biology laboratories, providing direct feedback on lab assignments, and assisting the course instructor with evaluating assignments. These labs may be online or in-person.
Specific responsibilities will include preparing laboratory teaching materials, equipment, specimens, and reagents; setting up laboratories prior to scheduled sessions; and ensuring relevant lab spaces are appropriately organized and maintained for instruction.
Coordinate multiple lab sections, teaching assistants, and laboratory instructors.
Other duties as assigned by the relevant course instructors or Biology Department Chair (for e.g., fire warden for floor, exam invigilation, etc.).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BSc in Biology (or equivalent), with a strong background in applying molecular biology techniques, ecology, and organismal biology.
- A MSc is considered a definite asset.
- Good scientific communication skills.
- Good data/statistical and analysis skills.
- Good organizational skills.
- Experience instructing biology labs.
- Experience in research setting(s) that is transferable to the training of undergraduate students via teaching labs to carry out biology-related experiments or studies, obtained via a degree or previous relevant work experience (inside or outside academia).
