The Department of Biology at the University of Prince Edward Island has openings for Sessional Instructors during the forthcoming Summer 2024 sessions, subject to final budgetary approval. 

Please note: the courses offered below will be taught in person, unless otherwise specified as online courses.

Summer 2024

(First summer session May 6 – June 18, 2024)

BIO 1210 – Human Anatomy

This course covers the structure of the human body from cells to tissues to organ systems. The gross anatomy and histology of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, digestive, urinary and reproductive system of humans is surveyed.

Although there are labs in this course, the sessional instructor is only responsible for teaching the lectures.

Classes:  T/Th 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Labs: T/Th 3:30 – 6:00 p.m.


Summer 2024

(Second Summer session June 24 – August 6, 2024)

BIO 1060 – Introductory Microbiology for Life Sciences

This course is an introduction to the basic concepts and principles of microbiology. The structure and function of the major groups—viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa—which affect human health, are studied. Topics include the process of disease transmission, immunology, physical and chemical methods of disease prevention and control, as well as major infectious diseases of the body systems.

Although there are labs in this course, the sessional instructor is only responsible for teaching the lectures.

Classes:  M/W 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Labs:  M/W 3:30 – 6:00 p.m.

BIO 1220 – Human Physiology

This course deals with the functioning of the human body. The physiology of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems is surveyed.  Although there are labs in this course, the sessional instructor is only responsible for teaching the lectures.

Qualifications: 

Applicants must hold an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in a field of science/biology related to the respective course content. Documented experience teaching these courses would be a definite asset.

Salary: As per Sessional Instructor Stipends outlined in the Collective Agreement of the UPEI Faculty Association, Bargaining Unit #1

Preference will be given to the qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI Sessional Roster, those with experience in teaching university level courses, and full-time and term contract Faculty Members of the Academic unit.
