Nominations and applications are invited for a full-time position of AVC Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research.  This is a 3-year position that will be reviewed after 1 year. It offers the possibility of renewal for an additional 3-year term.  This is an internal search open only to full-time faculty of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Prince Edward Island. This appointment is subject to final budgetary approval.

The major responsibilities of the person selected for this position include:

  • Administrative responsibility for the coordination and promotion of research and graduate programs within the College and with external stakeholders
  • Chair of the AVC Graduate Studies and Research Committee
  • Develop strategies for increasing research funding for AVC faculty members
  • Develop and implement initiatives to facilitate research collaborations between AVC, UPEI faculties and/or other academic/research institutions, industry, and governments
  • Responsible for the administration of, and adjudication for, the College’s internal research funds
  • Compile reports on research and graduate studies activities in the College and establish and maintain productivity parameters for research at AVC
  • Coordinate the use and utilization of research resources such as laboratory and research space, and equipment
  • Work with the department chairs to ensure there are meaningful support and mentorship opportunities to early career researchers
  • Enhance opportunities for research for undergraduate and graduate students within AVC
  • Coordinate and implement AVC graduate student recruitment efforts
  • Coordinate a register of all graduate students and a record of their progress and performance
  • Work with AVC department chairs and faculty members to enhance graduate student success
  • Organize collegial activities between different groups of graduate students to enhance comradery and peer-mentoring
  • Serve as a member of AVC Dean’s Council and the main campus Research Advisory Council
  • Other duties and committee membership(s) as assigned by the Dean (e.g. the potential for overseeing Animal Resources)

QUALIFICATIONS:  

The following criteria will be used to select the person for this position:

  • Possesses a graduate degree (a PhD would be an asset)
  • Has substantial research experience
  • Has an active research program
  • Has experience successfully using the research administrative systems at UPEI
  • Has teaching experience with graduate level courses
  • Has supervision experience of graduate students as primary and/or co-supervisor to successful completion (a PhD student would be an asset)
  • Has knowledge of research granting agencies and research grant competitions
  • Has personal experience and success with a variety of funding sources (e.g. Tri-council funding, industry funding, etc.)
