Are you a graduate student looking to strengthen your teaching practice this summer and connect with peers across campus? Are you a graduate supervisor interested in supporting your students’ professional development by encouraging them to begin building a teaching toolkit for their academic careers?

The Summer Academic Instructional Skills Program Quick Start offers a series of introductory courses designed to build confidence and skills for teaching in both online and in-person settings. These quick-start courses also build toward the Certificate in University Teaching, helping you make meaningful progress in your professional development.

Bring your lunch and join fellow graduate students for these interactive sessions with the opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect. The Summer Academic Instructional Skills Program Quick Start combines self-paced learning in Moodle with weekly interactive discussions. To get the most from the program, participants are asked to engage with the Moodle activities before each Wednesday session. Reviewing the materials in advance helps create richer conversations, allows participants to bring questions and ideas to the group, and supports meaningful exchange with colleagues.
Participants will receive access to the Moodle course approximately one week before the July 8 opening session. This early access provides an opportunity to become familiar with the course environment and begin exploring the introductory materials at a comfortable pace.

  • In How People Learn, you’ll examine key learning theories and reflect on how cognitive, social-emotional, and cultural factors shape student learning and your teaching practice.

  • Developing Feedback Literacy focuses on helping you and your students make the most of feedback, with strategies like feedback loops, exemplars, and peer feedback.

  • Grading Assignments in Moodle develops your skills in digital assessment, including using grading tools, applying rubrics and marking guides, and providing effective feedback.

Sessions run Wednesdays from 12–1 pm, July 8–22, in the TLC - Robertson Library annex 228 (location is subject to change due to on-going construction in the library).
