Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Ladner’s Source for Sports Athletes of the Week for October 26–November 1 are Stefania Angona (women’s cross country) and Joel Gallant (men’s cross country). Both Panthers competed at the AUS Bell Cross Country Championships, hosted by St. Francis Xavier University, on October 30 and 31 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

Angona is a fifth-year psychology student from Brampton, Ontario. She capped off her final AUS cross country championships with a standout performance, finishing eighth overall with a time of 29:47 to earn her first career AUS all-star selection.

“Stef's finish and all-star placing has been the culmination of five years of hard work. She has been the model of consistency and a huge part of the program, so it was fantastic to see her recognized for her work both on and off the trail,” said Mike Peterson, UPEI Cross Country head coach.

Gallant is a fifth-year human biology student from Wellington, PEI. He delivered another impressive performance at the cross country championships, finishing fifth overall with a time of 25:44 to earn his fourth consecutive AUS All-Star selection.

“Joel put together a tremendous season, and his hard work continues to pay off. He ran a very smart race, executed his plan exceptionally well, and has the strong result to show,” said Peterson.
