Orianna MacNeil and Xander Devine named UPEI Panther Ladner’s Source for Sports Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Ladner’s Source for Sports Athletes of the Week for October 12–18 are Orianna MacNeil (women’s hockey) and Xander Devine (men’s soccer).
MacNeil is a fourth-year education student from Mabou, Nova Scotia. She was a commanding presence on the blue line, making an impact at both ends of the ice. Her strong two-way play was reflected in her offensive production, as she recorded two goals and an assist to help the Panthers secure wins over Mount Allison University on October 14 and St. Francis Xavier University on October 17.
“When Orianna is playing her best brand of hockey, she is dangerous from just about anywhere on the ice,” said Sean Fisher, UPEI Women’s Hockey head coach. “She's demonstrating great leadership habits on and off the ice and proving why she's one of the best in the country.”
Devine is a second-year business student from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He delivered his best performance as a Panther, playing a pivotal role in UPEI's 6-2 victory over Mount Allison on October 15. He had a hand in four of the team's six goals, scoring twice, adding an assist, and drawing a penalty that led to another goal.
“Xander was a threat throughout the weekend, showcasing his quality on the ball with important attacking contributions. He also put in the work off the ball, showing his commitment to helping at both ends of the pitch,” said Mozzi Gyorio, UPEI Men’s Soccer head coach.
