Sarah Bain and Isaac Sommerville named UPEI Panther Ladner’s Source for Sports Athletes of the Week

Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Ladner’s Source for Sports Athletes of the Week for September 21–27 are Sarah Bain (women’s rugby) and Isaac Sommerville (men’s soccer).

Bain is a fourth-year environmental studies student from Millcove, PEI. She delivered a dominant two-try performance in UPEI’s 39-22 upset of the defending AUS champion St. Francis Xavier University X-Women on September 26. She used her power and physicality to set the tone in one of the Panthers’ biggest wins of the season.

“Sarah has been exceptional for us not only in her performance on the field but in the way she leads our group every day,” said Curtis Lauzon, UPEI Women’s Rugby Panthers head coach. “She consistently lives out our team values through her actions, her energy, and the way she supports those around her. She’s been a tremendous example of what it means to be a Panther, and her performance this weekend reflected the impact she continues to have on our program.”

Sommerville is a second-year psychology student from Memramcook, New Brunswick. He has been a steady and reliable presence in the Panthers’ midfield all season, contributing at both ends of the pitch while emerging as one of the team’s top attacking threats. He scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season on September 25 in a 3-1 loss to the University of New Brunswick.

“Isaac showed great desire throughout the game, looking to lead by example from the midfield. His work rate and commitment were evident despite the difficult result,” said Mozzi Gyorio, UPEI Men’s Soccer Panthers head coach.
