Rowan Gallagher and Rio Crystal named UPEI Panther Source for Sports Athletes of the Week

Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Source for Sports Athletes of the Week for September 7–13 are Rowan Gallagher (women’s rugby) and Rio Crystal (men’s soccer).

Gallagher is a third-year science student from Halifax, Nova Scotia. She delivered a standout performance against one of the country’s top rugby programs, scoring three tries in the Panthers’ 59-36 loss to the St. Francis Xavier University X-Women on September 11.

“Rowan embraced the move from outside centre to fullback this week and immediately showed how dangerous she can be in that role. Her three tries were a great reward for her willingness to take on a new opportunity, but it was her confidence, work rate, and impact across the match that really stood out,” said Curtis Lauzon, UPEI Women’s Rugby Panthers head coach.

Crystal is a third-year business student from Comox, British Columbia. He scored the game-winning goal in victories over Mount Allison University and Acadia University on September 11 and 13 to help the Panthers improve to 4-0 and secure their best start to a season since 2011.

“Rio helped us secure two important wins this weekend, scoring in both matches,” said Mozzi Gyorio, UPEI Men’s Soccer Panthers head coach. “Playing the full 90 minutes in each game, he showed a consistent work rate and commitment on both sides of the ball. He had two solid performances and was a key contributor to the team’s success.”
