Paula Wood-Adams appointed Interim Vice-President, Academic and Research
The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) welcomes Paula Wood-Adams as the new Interim Vice-President, Academic and Research (VPAR) for a one-year term, effective June 2026. A distinguished professor of engineering and internationally recognized expert in applied polymer science, Wood-Adams brings over three decades of leadership, academic excellence, and research expertise to the UPEI community.
Wood-Adams’ career spans top Canadian industry and academic institutions. She began as a research engineer at Dow Chemical Canada (1990–1993) before transitioning to academia with early appointments at McGill University. She spent over two decades building a legacy at Concordia University (2001–2023), where she held key executive roles, including Dean of Graduate Studies and Interim Vice-President of Research and Graduate Studies. During her time at Concordia, she modernized graduate education, expanded enrolment, and guided the institution’s research strategy through the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, she served as Vice-President of Research and Innovation at the University of Northern British Columbia (2023–2025). Her broad commitment to academic and research governance is reflected in her board service with organizations such as Biodiversity Pathways and John Abbott College, and as founding chair of the National Cybersecurity Consortium.
Beyond her executive leadership, Wood-Adams is an accomplished researcher in multiphase polymer materials, rheology, and structure–property relationships. She has authored 79 peer-reviewed journal articles, secured over $3.8 million in external funding, trained 31 highly qualified personnel, and earned international recognition among leading scientists in her field.
At UPEI, she steps into her role as Interim VPAR to provide steady, forward-looking strategic leadership across academic and research domains. She will serve as a bridge between faculty, staff, students, and administration, ensuring operational sustainability while elevating UPEI’s research output and academic activities.
Drawn to UPEI by its unique blend of strong community ties, world-class research, and tight-knit campus environment, Wood-Adams views the close community setting as ideal for testing new ideas and fostering innovation. During her initial weeks on campus, she has focused on listening, connecting with people, understanding the context, and learning the institutional dynamics.
“I have met many wonderful people who are committed to serving this institution and our students,” she said.
Looking ahead, she sees immense potential in expanding academic and research partnerships and focusing on regional impact, while working closely with the provincial government.
At her core, Wood-Adams considers herself an educator who thrives on collaboration and open communication, always working towards providing the best experience and the most opportunities for students. Eager to immerse herself in campus events and Island life, she looks forward to making Charlottetown her home and engaging deeply with the UPEI community.
