The University of Prince Edward Island has been named one of Canada’s Best Employers in 2026 by Forbes.

Forbes released the 2026 list on January 20. UPEI placed 47th out of 300 Canadian employers on the list. The Government of Prince Edward Island was the only other employer from the province to make the list.

“Being recognized by Forbes as one of Canada’s Top Employers for 2026—and as a strong performer within the education sector—speaks to the momentum we are building at the University of Prince Edward Island,” said Dr. Jane Ngobia, Vice-President, People and Culture. “This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to cultivating an inclusive, caring, and people centred workplace where all our employees can thrive. We are proud of the role UPEI plays as a leading employer in Canada and here on Prince Edward Island, grounded in our values and our responsibility to the communities we serve.”

A news release from Forbes said that more than 37,000 Canada-based employees working for businesses with at least 500 workers in Canada were surveyed for the ranking. The participants, who remained anonymous, were asked if they would recommend their employer to others and to rate it based on criteria that included, among other things, compensation packages, work flexibility, training opportunities, and leadership programs. They were also asked if they would recommend employers they knew within their industry or through friends or family who worked there.

The responses were tallied and combined with survey data from the last three years, said the release, which allowed for a more long-term assessment of organizations that ranked well over the past few years versus companies that may have had just one good year. The more recent data and survey responses from current employees were weighted more heavily than others. Each employer was given a score, and the 300 organizations with the highest scores made the list.

“We are proud of the efforts we are making towards making this a great place to work,” said Dr. Ngobia.
