Dr. Kate Scarth, Chair of L.M. Montgomery Studies at UPEI, is surrounded by books by and about PEI author L.M. Montgomery.

A six-lecture audio series titled The Life and Works of L. M. Montgomery by Dr. Kate Scarth, Chair of L.M. Montgomery Studies, and Applied Communication, Leadership, and Culture, is now available through The Great Courses on Audible.

Scarth opens the series with an introductory lecture and then in the next five, explores key topics that illuminate Montgomery’s life, works, and legacy: family, place, friendship, creativity, and literature.

Listeners will explore the impact that the author’s personal experiences had on her writing and get a clearer picture of how life shapes—and is shaped by—literature. They will discover why Montgomery’s novels mattered in her own time—and still matter today—and better understand the lasting and international influence of her life and her work across the generations.

“As Chair of L.M. Montgomery Studies at UPEI, I get to see firsthand how people from all over—Japan and Iran, Brazil and Poland, across North America, and right here in PEI—are inspired to make pilgrimages, create their own art, and make friends with other fans, all because of Montgomery,” said Scarth. “By creating this Great Course/Audible Original, I’m honoured to be continuing the conversation about this artist from PEI, one of the English language’s greatest novelists who has inspired people for over a century and all around the world.”

Scarth’s colleague, Dr. Brenton Dickieson, had high praise for the series in his blog A Pilgrim in Narnia.

The series, which was launched on August 14, is available through the Audible app and website.
