The UPEI Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation is hosting a free public education program titled “Coastal Conversations: Understanding, Adapting, Acting” about the challenges and solutions shaping PEI’s changing coastline—from erosion and climate impacts to erosion monitoring techniques and the work of watershed groups.

The sessions, which are happening across the province, are open to everyone.

Starting the week of July 21, a session titled “Watersheds and nature-based actions” will be presented. Participants will hear from local watershed groups and the PEI Watershed Alliance about the work they do. The dates and locations are as follows:

  • July 21, 6 to 7 pm, The Charlottetown Library Learning Centre, Rotary A Auditorium
  • July 22, 2 to 3 pm, UPEI Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation, St. Peter’s Bay
  • July 23, 2 to 3 pm, Cavendish Farms Community Events Centre, Tyne Valley
  • July 24, 5 to 6 pm, Plough the Waves Community Hall, Wood Islands
  • July 25, 2 to 3 pm, Eliyahu Wellness Centre, North Rustico

The next week will feature “Coastal monitoring at home.” The Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action will provide a tutorial about how the Coastal Hazard Risk Information System (CHRIS) can be used to visualize coastal hazards across PEI. Participants will be able to view a StoryMap that hosts all the data collected as part of the UPEI coastal monitoring program and learn how coastal property owners can collect and upload their own data to the StoryMap. The dates and locations are as follows:

  • July 28, 6 to 7 pm, The Charlottetown Library Learning Centre, Rotary A Auditorium
  • July 29, 2 to 3 pm, UPEI Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation, St. Peter’s Bay
  • July 30, 2 to 3 pm, Cavendish Farms Community Events Centre, Tyne Valley
  • July 31, 5 to 6 pm, Plough the Waves Community Hall, Wood Islands
  • August 1, 2 to 3 pm, Eliyahu Wellness Centre, North Rustico

The final session will cover “Coastal policy on PEI.” The departments of Transportation and Infrastructure and Environment, Energy and Climate Action will provide information about policy actions that have been implemented from the Interim Coastal Policy Recommendation Report and the Climate Adaptation Plan. The dates and locations are as follows:

  • August 4, 6 to 7 pm, The Charlottetown Library Learning Centre, Rotary A Auditorium
  • August 6, 2 to 3 pm, Cavendish Farms Community Events Centre, Tyne Valley
  • August 7, 5 to 6 pm, Plough the Waves Community Hall, Wood Islands
  • August 8, 2 to 3 pm, Eliyahu Wellness Centre, North Rustico

There is no session at the UPEI Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation, St. Peter’s Bay, during the “Coastal policy on PEI” week.
