UPEI held its annual Celebration of Colleagues on May 29, 2025, to recognize the achievements of faculty, librarians, clinical veterinary professionals, clinical nursing instructors, sessional instructors, and staff members. UPEI Communications is profiling the winners of the University Awards of Excellence in summer editions of the Campus Connector newsletter.

Dr. Kuljeet Grewal, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering (FSDE), received a University Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision. He exemplifies these values through his innovative, student-centered approach that blends hands-on research, real-world application, and active community engagement.

Since joining UPEI in 2021, Dr. Grewal has built an extraordinary mentorship environment through the creation of the Future Urban and Energy Lab for Sustainability (FUEL-S). Under his leadership, FUEL-S has become one of the largest and most diverse research labs in the FSDE, attracting diverse students and fostering interdisciplinary research. In addition, the program fosters equity, diversity, and inclusion by engaging students from diverse backgrounds in collaborative, hands-on, sustainable engineering projects.

Dr. Grewal’s students are actively involved in cutting-edge research with real-world impact. A prime example is the Georgetown Living Lab Initiative, where students collect, analyze, and utilize real-life data to assess and enhance the town’s net-zero potential. Under his guidance, students work closely with the local community, teaching residents to use thermal imaging technology to evaluate building energy efficiency, conducting community-led data collection, and developing AI-driven zoning models for sustainable infrastructure planning.

Under Dr. Grewal’s mentorship, several of his students have authored publications that have been published in leading journals and presented at conferences. He actively seeks funding opportunities, encourages scholarship applications, and facilitates industry collaborations.

For his outstanding dedication to student development, innovative mentorship practices, and lasting contributions to graduate education, Dr. Grewal exemplifies the spirit of this award and is a truly worthy recipient of the University Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision.

Congratulations, Dr. Grewal!
